The South of England Cochlear Implant Centre was established in 1990 to help severely to profoundly deaf adults and children. Since the programme began at this centre the surgeons have implanted over 620 devices and given over 530 people the sensation of sound. We are currently supporting over 510 adults and children with cochlear implants and 70 of these are using two implants.
This centre firmly believes that the treatment of both adults and children by the same team is a great strength. The feedback that adult patients give has provided valuable knowledge for working with young children who may be unable to report what they hear. A further advantage of this centre is its situation within the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton, providing a perfect location for high quality research.
The South of England Cochlear Implant Centre treats patients from all over the south of England and the Channel Islands. Surgeries are carried out by three surgeons at four hospitals in Southampton, Portsmouth and Hampshire.
